Contents

Off-road driving and 4×4 adventures offer incomparable driving pleasure. Are you an off-roader, long-distance traveler or camper? Then put not only your vehicle to the test, but also its accessories.

If you venture off-road, you need an off-road vehicle and carefully selected off-road equipment. Only then will you be prepared for any challenge. From classic tools to special rescue aids - a few essential items will ensure your safety and mobility on rough terrain.

The right equipment is essential for safe and efficient driving in rough terrain. This includes on-board tools and rescue aids that can save lives if necessary.

Here are my tips for off-road enthusiasts and long-distance travelers.

On-board tools: The most important little helpers

Off-road adventures with 4×4 or 6×6 are exciting. They are often a must on long-distance trips and expeditions. You explore nature and put your vehicle to the test in challenging terrain.

On-board tools are essential utensils for your vehicle. They enable quick repairs and adjustments on the road. Admittedly, the following list may seem very long. However, it contains the most important little helpers.

  • Wrench: Different sizes for different screws
  • Screwdriver: Phillips and slotted screwdrivers in various sizes
  • PliersCombination pliers and special pliers such as pipe wrenches
  • Multifunction tool: Practical for quick small jobs
  • Torque wrench: You don't tighten every screw by feel
  • Hammer: Metal hammer, plastic/rubber hammer
  • Breaking and mounting tools: Indispensable when changing or bending tires
  • Metal saw: For steel or aluminum sheet and pipe sections
  • Wire brushes: Removes rust, grease or dirt
  • Stick/headlamp: Illuminates vehicle floor, engine compartment or helps with night work
  • Cordless screwdriverManual is always possible, battery operation is easier. A cordless screwdriver should be on board. Plus a steel drill set and various bits. If you pack a few taps with matching screws, you're well equipped.
  • Riveting pliers and rivetsNot a must, but very helpful. Quickly fix a sheet metal or plastic part.
  • Tin snipsSmall and larger tin snips are useful. Cut sheet metal, wire or wire mesh to size.
  • Power tool: Side cutters, wire strippers, crimping pliers, voltmeter, cable lugs, heat-shrink tubing and cables in various thicknesses
  • Replacement bulbs: Carry spare bulbs for almost all lights on the vehicle
  • Fuses: I have fuses in all strengths with me
  • Cable tieThe ultimate tool for repairs and fixings on the vehicle. Sometimes also useful in the household.
  • GlovesProtect your hands when working on the vehicle, woodworking or salvaging
  • Penetrating oil, silicone spray, brake cleaner and greaseMany components on the vehicle need to be lubricated, oiled, greased or cleaned. The nearest workshop is rarely close by.
  • Multitool: Small helpers for quick work without opening the tool case or tool roll
  • Tool RollThe Tool Roll from Nakatanenga is a very good option. Keep tools neat, handy and safe.
  • GlueWhere screws and rivets are inappropriate or impossible, adhesive does a good job. From our own experience, Beko drywall profile adhesive bonds everything: plastics, metal, aluminum and wood. You will need a cartridge gun/kit sprayer to apply it.
  • Adhesive tapeFor a secure hold or fixation, use Panzertape. It is a fabric-reinforced foil tape. It can be written on, torn by hand, is tear-resistant and weatherproof. In an emergency, you can even save a torn awning or tarpaulin.
  • Needle and thread: Always belong in the mobile household. Braided fishing line is advisable for special applications. It is thin and extremely tear-resistant. You can use it to repair tarpaulins or awnings.

Flat tire: How to get back on the road soon

In the event of a flat tire, you should not only have a spare wheel or a spare tire with you. The right tools and repair kits should also be on board.

Changing the complete wheel: simple and with few tools

  • Jack: Lifts the vehicle for changing tires
  • Wheel cross or socket wrench: Loosens and tightens screws
  • Torque wrench: For the correct tightening force
  • Trestle: Provides more safety if the surface is not level and stable enough for the jack

Changing just the tire: With skill and some special tools

For space and weight reasons, you often only carry one spare tire. If you only have one spare tire with you (not a complete wheel), you have to change a damaged tire. You take the damaged tire off the rim and put on the new one. You will need special tools and some skill to do this.

  • Chucks: Two are better than one for mounting and demounting the tire
  • Tire mounting pasteFacilitates the mounting and demounting of the tire
  • Tire valves: I have a few suitable ones in my emergency kit
  • Tire pressure gauge/tire deflatorChecks the optimum air pressure and releases air in a targeted manner
  • Compressor: Inflates the tire

Repairing the spare tire: When plan A has already run its course

Do you already have your spare tire in use and it is repairable? Then these tools and repair kits will come in handy.

Rescue equipment: Getting out of the muddy mess

Recovery aids are crucial for pulling vehicles out of awkward situations. Sand, mud or river crossings all carry the risk of getting stuck. In such situations, it helps if you are traveling with several vehicles. If you are traveling alone, your recovery equipment will help you.

Good equipment made from high-quality materials has a long service life. It offers the necessary safety. You should always have these things with you.

Tow ropes: Your lifeline off-road

A durable rope is a must for off-road enthusiasts. It has numerous uses: from vehicle recovery to improvised structures such as a tent or hammock. A rope is part of the recovery equipment. There are also straps and shackles made of steel or soft shackles.

Important criteria when selecting a rope:

  • MaterialSynthetic materials such as nylon or polypropylene offer high tensile strength and are lightweight.
  • Length and thickness: Choose a rope that is strong enough for the weight of your vehicle
  • VersatilitySome ropes have hooks or loops for easier handling

Equipment:

  • Strong tow ropePulls vehicles
  • Shackles and connecting elementsSecure the connection between vehicles. You can use steel and soft shackles.
  • Recovery belt: A heavy-duty belt pulls the vehicle out of difficult situations

Sand plates: When the grip is missing

  • UseIdeal for regaining grip in sandy or muddy areas. Prevents the tires from spinning.
  • MaterialMade of aluminum and plastic. They are light and robust, often with special handles. I personally recommend plastic sand trays. They have a profile on both sides. It provides grip for the tires and digs into the ground.

Jacks: high up instead of low down

  • Heavy-duty trolley jackLifts the vehicle quickly, especially in deep mud or sand situations. The Hi-Lift can be used here if you have space and loading capacity.
  • AirliftA useful option with compressed air. Provides a safe lifting angle.

Cable winch: Your mechanical muscleman

A rope alone won't get you out of trouble. If you are traveling alone and get stuck, a cable winch is just the thing. It will free you from awkward situations. If you don't have a cable winch on your vehicle, carry a Hi-Lift or the innovative solutions from Relleumdesign with the Hooist manual cable winch. With these tools, you can carry out a rescue with your own hands.

  • Cable winchPulls vehicles or removes heavy objects. There are electric and manual versions.
  • Safety precautionsStrong fastenings and correct use are important to prevent accidents.
  • PowerThe cable winch must be able to pull the vehicle weight plus 30%. Safety first.

Shovel and spade:

There is a large selection of these tools. A shovel and/or spade must always be in the vehicle. They must not be too small. A small shovel is better than none, a larger one is better than a small one.

A shovel and sand plate will help you quickly without having to use the cable winch and rescue harness. You don't just use the shovel and/or spade for recovery. Quickly dig a hole, dig a small trench or clear an embankment. You can also use them to lever aside stones or large branches.

Axe and co: woodchipper romance meets necessity

The axe is a versatile tool for any off-road equipment. You can use it for various tasks: Felling wood, removing obstacles or splitting wood for a campfire. In addition to the axe, you are well equipped with pruning shears, a bush knife, wood saw or chainsaw.

Characteristics of a good axe:

  • Robust constructionAn axe for off-road use should be made of high-quality steel and have a sturdy handle
  • Compact size: A handy model is easier to stow in the vehicle
  • Versatility: Some axes have additional functions such as a hammer head or a saw edge

Other little helpers: It's all in the details

  • Wood sawA hand saw or battery-powered chainsaw helps when making firewood or clearing paths. Remove low-hanging branches.
  • Branch shears: Removes smaller branches and twigs
  • Bush knife: Removes loose undergrowth or makes firewood

Vehicle technology:

It's not just the equipment you carry that ensures safety. You can equip the vehicle yourself with various add-ons: Underride guard, additional LED headlights, branch deflector, intake snorkel or bullbar.

These additions not only enhance the appearance and price of vehicles. They also increase safety and durability. These off-road vehicles are high-quality and usually expensive to purchase.

High-quality off-road equipment: an investment in your future

Off-road does not mean that you are constantly driving the vehicle off the beaten track. However, there will be situations where you have to go off-road. Good equipment is essential here.

Choosing and carrying the right on-board tools and recovery aids is crucial for a safe off-road experience. These tools not only solve potential problems quickly. They also provide safety and confidence to tackle the rough conditions of the terrain.

Thorough preparation and the right tools in your luggage can make all the difference. Between an unforgettable adventure and an unpleasant situation.
